About joyce health

What we do

  • Joyce Health is an online mental health/psychiatry clinic based in Alberta, Canada.
  • We serve children & adolescents (age <18) across Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
  • We provide diagnostic and treatment services (including prescribing medications), follow-up our patients until they are better.
  • We also provide free counselling services including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectic behavioural therapy (DBT).
  • We are run by child/adolescent psychiatrists and family physicians with specialized training in child/adolescent mental health diagnosis and prescribing (via the CanREACH Fellowship).
  • Our goal is to improve access to child/adolescent psychiatry and significantly reduce psychiatry wait times for vulnerable children, especially for children who require medication to manage their conditions.
  • We emphasize working with the entire family unit for the sake of the child’s or young adult’s mental health.
  • We are pleased to provide our services in English and Mandarin Chinese (more languages to come).

Why we are called "Joyce Health"

  1. Joy is a Choice: whether it’s choosing to focus on the positives of life, or choosing to seek help or take medications when needed, we believe that joy is within our control. It’s a choice we can make.
  2. Joyce Health supports the Joyce Principle: “Joyce's Principle aims to guarantee to all Indigenous people the right of equitable access, without any discrimination, to all social and health services, as well as the right to enjoy the best possible physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.” https://principedejoyce.com/en/index

Our service is free to anyone in Alberta and the Northwest Territories, as it is covered by government public health insurance in these regions.

Please note:

- We are not a crisis service. Please call 911 or go to the Emergency Department if you are having a mental health crisis.

- We do not prescribe potentially addictive medications.

- We do not do psycho-educational assessments.

- It is the parent's responsibility to follow legal custody agreements. If there is intra-family conflict and both parents have custody, please ensure both parents have provided consent on our consent form.

Service limitations

Please note the following limitations to our services:

We are not a primary care service. We are a specialist consult service and focus strictly on mental health issues.

We are not a crisis or emergency service. If you have any questions outside of your appointment time, please book a followup appointment, or if the appointment is too far out, please contact your family doctor/walk in clinic, or go to an emergency room.

We will not be able to deal with medical issues outside of your appointment time.

Please be patient and kind to our staff over the phone or on videoconferences.

We have a zero-tolerance policy regarding verbal abuse of our staff. If abuse arises, we will no longer be able to provide ongoing care for you.

Our Non-insured FEES AND NO SHOW/CANCELLATION POLICY:

Our diagnostic, treatment, and followup services are 100% free to Alberta and NWT citizens, as they are covered by public Alberta Health Insurance.

However, public health insurance does not cover fees for items such as support letters or no-shows to appointments.
